Portugal's capital city is one of the oldest cities in the world, having been continuously populated since 1,200 BC. More than a quarter of the country's population live within the city and its wider metropolitan area. Lisbon has for centuries been a city of global significance - from its glory days of global exploration to its modern day status as a global city. As well as being one of Europe's major economic centres it has a thriving trade in tourism, with more than 1.5 million visiting each year. Lisbon's famous landmarks cover many centuries: from the Moorish Castelo de São Jorge and elegant 17th century Fronteira Palace, to 20th century classics like the stunning 25 de Abril suspension bridge and the Monument to the Discoveries. The city has an abundance of quality restaurants and bars, excellent shopping facilities (from designer, to craft, to every-day shopping), and a thriving arts scene.
One of the joys of Lisbon is that there are so many vantage points offered by its hilly terrain. Lisboans have capitalized on this by creating superb viewing areas like the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara (a pretty terrace garden, looking out high over Bairro Alto) and Miradouro da Senhora do Monte (the highest viewing area, with the widest field of sight). As would be expected of such an old city, there is history on almost every corner and must see buildings like the 16th century Church of São Roque (home of the world's most expensive chapel) and 12th century Cathedral of Saint Mary Major (Sé de Lisboa). This history has led to the establishment of many high quality museums, covering all interests - the Gulbenkian Museum, for example, has a fine collection of art from the ancient civilizations of the world, European art by some of the most well known of the old masters, and a modern art gallery within the same grounds.
Each year Lisbon holds a number of summer festivals and a carnival in February. Families are well catered for whether or not your visit coincides with events like these - the Lisbon Zoo has animal displays, a children's farm, train and cable car rides, and the Oceanário de Lisboa is an aquarium that will not fail to amaze the younger family members. Those who like shopping when on holiday are able to spend hours in Lisbon's 'West End' district of Chiado - where international outlets, quality local traders and high-fashion mix in the most stylish of streets. Lisbon is also a city where quality is a byword for the local restaurants and cafés - whether you are looking for a full meal or just to try Belém's local custard tart treat 'pastel de Belém'.

When to visit Lisbon
Lisbon's Mediterranean like climate makes it a great destination to visit all year round (even in winter, temperatures average out at about 11o Celsius). The high-season of June through August sees the capital at its busiest and of course temperatures at their highest. Shoulder seasons of March to May and September through October are ideal for those who want to avoid extreme heat and crowds and also for those seeking a good deal on the price of their holiday. If you're happy to risk the rain, you can take advantage of excellent low season (November through February) deals and still be confident of mild daytime temperatures.

Getting to and around Lisbon
Until recently the only options for getting from Lisbon Airport into the city were either by bus or by taxi but since July 2012 Lisbon Airport has had its own dedicated metro station, whatever your preferred choice to travel, the journey is quite short because the airport is situated only about 7 kilometers from the city centre. Lisbon is a compact city and often the best way to get around is on foot. Lisbon's busses and trams are very cheap to travel on and although rather slow, they are pretty frequent. The metro system is the best way to get around quickly and taxis, although susceptible to the frequent traffic jams, are reasonably priced.
